deannewsyarticlethumbThe Dean Foods plant in Chemung, IL (northwest of Chicago) is part of their Midwest Division and produces a range of dairy and beverage products. These include the popular Dean’s Milk Chugs as well as their Swiss brand premium iced tea drink. The Chemung plant‘s director of engineering & maintenance, Steve Hiser, has been upgrading a portion of their production monitoring via our KING-GAGE® LP3 tank level system.

Hiser and his team have integrated the LP3 system into the plant’s process control. Tanks are outfitted with our AcraSensor, 868 D/P transmitter package that provides 4-20 mA signal to the LP3 system input modules. Tank level from the LP3 system linked via Allen-Bradley DF1 over Ethernet is utilized by their PLC while operations personnel monitor inventory on the LP3 color touch screen display. Confidence in the KING-GAGE LP3 system has been instrumental in their decision to expand its application.

In the Chemung plant, one key element has been the LP3 system’s ability to easily assimilate additional tanks over the course of the last 24 months. Previous generation KING-GAGE digital system units are still in service for many of the 30+ tanks in the plant. That flexibility has allowed for ongoing changeover that takes into account their production schedule. They have been assisted by our local distributor, Mike Surin of Surwest Corp. (Hinsdale, IL) in transitioning over to the new LP3 System. His knowledge provides an additional level of support for the project.

The LP3 System offers an intuitive user interface with both graphical tank displays and a tabular view that can display up to 32 tanks on the screen. The color touch screen LCD is rated for IP68 and suitable for wash down locations on the production floor. While the plant in Chemung employs the Allen-Bradley interface option, the LP3 system has a web server function that can provide remote viewing of the system over a network connection to any PC or other web-enabled device.
